TELLING OUR TESTING STORIES

As software practitioners focusing on technology issues, we often find that our messages to management and the business are either not heard or are misinterpreted. And sometimes we do not hear the messages that they need us to hear. Isabel Evans examines our natural ability to tell stories and how everyone’s built-in receptiveness to narratives will help you communicate productively about testing and quality.

Isabel looks at how we can tell our testing stories in a way that is appealing to our audience. That means thinking about the role of oral, written, and visual representations of testing stories and practicing communicating through the analogies of novels, short stories, picture books, poems, and songs. Because we will need a variety of story formats for our testing messages to work best, Isabel shares how to adapt testing stories to different audiences. Learn how we can better listen to other people’s stories and adapt our listening style to different storytellers.

FROM IDEAS TO PRODUCTION

Bits to increase overall quality. Final quality comes as a result of chain of well executed phases from conception to quality gate. Some key areas can be compromised if the right environment is not available or the effort is wasted in redundant or manual activities.
We will give a quick look into tools and processes that can help avoid this situation.

A CULTURE TRANSFORMATION, FROM WATERFALL TO DEVOPS, PASSING THROUGH AGILE.

I will discuss the challenges beyond a culture shift on large corporates from a traditional Project Management Waterfall approach to Agile/Lean processing, achieving a full DevOps change.

Transforming software solutions delivery with DevOps requires radical adoptions on the disruptive implementation of enterprise Big Data and Data Science solutions. New open source technologies underlay a paradigm shift on technical architectures delivering new principles of Continuous Integration, Deployment and Delivery achieving rapid delivery of high-quality enterprise software based on Microservices and Containerisation.

Such solutions produce high complex, decentralised distributed solutions that offer genuine challenges for test frameworks.

BLUNDERS IN TEST AUTOMATION

Blunders are mistakes caused by ignorance or carelessness. In test automation, a common blunder is thinking that manual testing is the same as automated testing. Find out what blunders you may be making in your automation, and how to avoid ending up with inefficient automation, high maintenance costs, and wasted effort.

Dorothy Graham takes us on a tour of these blunders, including: the Stable-Application Myth (you can’t start automating until the application is stable), Inside-the-Box Thinking (automating only the obvious test execution), the Project/Non-Project Dilemma (failing to treat automation like a project by not funding or resourcing it, and treating automation as only a project). Other blunders include Testing-Tools-Test, Silver Bullet, Automating the Wrong Thing, Who Needs GPS, How Hard Can It Be, and Isolationism. Different skills, approaches, and objectives are needed or you’ll end up with inefficient automation, high maintenance costs, and wasted effort. Join Dot to discover how you can avoid these common blunders and achieve valuable test automation.

INTERNET OF THINGS: GLOBAL TRENDS AND INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY

Technology has reached a point of inflection where it is about to explode pervasively into all industries. Pharmacuitcal, Engineering, Agricultural, Environmental etc are witnessing dramatic shifts due to technology innovation and are underpinned by technology day by day.

Ken will present on global trends and innovation in technology with emphasis on cross industry convergence. For example the internet of things is starting to be impletmented in organisations, established technology companies are providing IoT infrastructure and technology solutions however the beneficaries of IoT solutions are only at the beginning of their journey in understaning what it means to them, how to implement and how they will benefit. Ken will provide an overview of what he is witnessiong from an industry perspective and the type of journey companies are on.

Quality in use: the beating heart of the user experience

In today’s business environment, the user experience and the commercial imperatives have become overwhelmingly important. As testers it is vital that we understand quality in use and the user experience, in order that we focus our tests correctly.

'Quality in use' measures human, business and societal impacts of products (usability, accessibility, flexibility, commercial, safety). This builds to a User Experience (UX) and are underpinned by technical and engineering qualities. For the people selling, supporting or using the products, this is the beating heart of the customer experience. Without these 'big picture' attributes, delivered software will not be acceptable, may result in reduced profits, and may not be legal. In the tutorial, Isabel will use examples from real projects to discuss how to design tests derived from the user personas, contexts of use, and acceptance criteria.

Participants will learn:

  • To distinguish the layers of quality that must be designed and built into products, and tested;
  • How to understand and meet the context of use for each customer persona, from the internal quality through quality in use, to the user experience;
  • How to focus testing on customers, end users and the business;
  • How to select attributes from each layer of the user experience pyramid to track and measure during testing;
  • How to agree acceptance criteria for testing internal quality, quality in use and the user experience.

SERETTA GAMBA & DOROTHY GRAHAM

BIOGRAFIA

Seretta Gamba has more than 30 years experience in software development and testing. As test manager at Steria Mummert ISS GmbH she was charged in 2001 with the improvement of the test automation process. After studying the current strategies, she developed Command-Driven Testing and a supporting framework, which she presented at EuroSTAR 2005. At EuroSTAR 2009 she presented an enhancement to the framework that enabled the test automation team to “harvest” test case information by supporting manual testing. A description of this experience became Chapter 21 in the book “Experiences of Test Automation” by Dorothy Graham and Mark Fewster. In 2012 she started writing a book about Test Automation Patterns, which she is now working on along with Dorothy Graham on a wiki of Test Automation Patterns.

Dorothy Graham has been in software testing for over 40 years, and is co-author of 4 books: Software Inspection, Software Test Automation, Foundations of Software Testing and Experiences of Test Automation. She is currently working on the Test Automation Patterns wiki and a new book with Seretta Gamba. Dot was programme chair for EuroSTAR in 1993 and 2009, and has been attending STAR conferences since 1992. She has been on the boards of conferences and publications in software testing, was a founder member of the ISEB Software Testing Board and was a member of the working party that developed the ISTQB Foundation Syllabus. She was awarded the European Excellence Award in Software Testing in 1999 and the first ISTQB Excellence Award in 2012.

Test Automation Patterns

There are many problems in automating system level test execution. The surprising thing is that many people encounter the same problems, yet they are not aware of common solutions that have worked well for others – these are 'patterns'.

Seretta Gamba recognized the commonality of these test automation issues and their solutions and, together with Dorothy Graham, has organized them into Test Automation Patterns. Although unit test patterns are known elsewhere, our patterns address more general issues.

We cover management, process, design and execution patterns to help you recognize common test automation issues and show you how to identify appropriate patterns to solve the problems. Issues such as NO PREVIOUS AUTOMATION,UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, HIGH ROI EXPECTATIONS, or HIGH TEST MAINTENANCE COSTINADEQUATE SUPPORT, HIGH ROI EXPECTATIONS, INADEQUATE DOCUMENTATION, RANDOM AUTOMATION and TOOL DEPENDENCY are addressed by the patterns such as MAINTAINABLE TESTWARE, TOOL INDEPENDENCE and MANAGEMENT SUPPORTshown below. Bring your laptop to gain access to the wiki during the tutorial.
